NEW YORK, 18 March 2021 – Globally, more than 1.42 billion people, including 450 million children, live in areas of high, or extremely high, water vulnerability, according to lớn a new analysis released by This means that 1 in 5 children worldwide does not have enough water lớn meet their everyday needs.

The analysis, part of the Water Security for All initiative, identifies areas where physical water scarcity risks overlap with poor water service levels. Communities living in these areas depend on surface water, unimproved sources, or water which can take more than 30 minutes to lớn collect.

"The world"s water crisis is not simply coming, it is here, và climate change will only make it worse," said Executive Director Henrietta Fore. "Children are the biggest victims. When wells dry-up, children are the ones missing school lớn fetch water. When droughts diminish food supplies, children suffer from malnutrition & stunting. When floods hit, children fall ill from waterborne illnesses. Và when water resources decline, children cannot wash their hands khổng lồ fight off diseases."

The data shows that children in more than 80 countries live in areas with high or extremely high water vulnerability. Eastern & Southern Africa has the highest proportion of children living in such areas, with more than half of children – 58 per cent – facing difficulty accessing sufficient water every day. It is followed by West and Central Africa (31 per cent), South Asia (25 per cent), & the Middle East (23 per cent). South Asia is trang chủ to the largest number of children living in areas of high or extremely high water vulnerability – more than 155 million children.

Children in 37 ‘hotspot’ countries face especially dire circumstances in terms of absolute numbers, the proportions of children affected, & where global resources, support and urgent action must be mobilized. This menu includes Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Sudan, Tanzania và Yemen.

Demand for water continues lớn increase dramatically while resources are dwindling. In addition to rapid population growth, urbanization, water misuse & mismanagement, climate change và extreme weather events reduce available quantities of safe water, exacerbating water stress. According khổng lồ a report from 2017, almost 1 in 4 children globally will live in areas of extremely high water găng by 2040.

While the impact of water scarcity can be felt by all, no one suffers more than the most vulnerable children. Children & families living in vulnerable communities face the double-edged sword of coping with high water scarcity levels while having the lowest water services, making access lớn sufficient water especially susceptible to lớn climate shocks và extreme events.

In response, is launching the Water Security for All initiative to lớn ensure every child has access lớn sustainable và climate-resilient water services. The initiative aims to lớn mobilize resources, partnerships, innovation and global response to lớn identified hotspots where the need for safe, resilient và sustainable water, sanitation và hygiene services is the greatest and most urgent. is working to lớn provide:

Safe and affordable drinking water services: Access to lớn safe và affordable water services that are sustainable, close khổng lồ home, & managed professionally. Climate-resilient water, sanitation và hygiene services và communities: Water, sanitation và hygiene services that withstand climate shocks, operate using low carbon energy sources, & strengthen communities" resilience và adaptive capacities.Early action to prevent water scarcity: Resource assessments, sustainable water withdrawal, efficient use, and early warning and early preventative measures.Water cooperation for peace and stability: support to communities & key stakeholders so that equitable management of water, sanitation & hygiene services increase social cohesion, political stability & peace; và in conflict zones to lớn prevent attacks on water & sanitation infrastructure và personnel.

"We have to lớn act now both to address the water crisis và to prevent it from getting any worse,” said Fore. “We can only achieve water security for every child through innovation, investment và collaboration, and by ensuring services are sustainable and resilient lớn climate shocks. For our children và our planet, we have to lớn act.”

Notes to lớn editors

* Countries designated as ‘hotspots’ meet any of the following criteria: At least 60% of children live in areas of high water vulnerability; at least 40% of children live in areas of extremely high water vulnerability; at least 40% of children live in high và extremely high water vulnerability; & at least 2 million children in high và extremely high water vulnerability. These range of factors ensure that even smaller countries with high percentages of children affected also get prioritised.

Water scarcity: Water scarcity exists where the demand for water exceeds supply and where available water resources are approaching or have exceeded sustainable limits. Water scarcity can either be physical or economic.

Water stress: Water ức chế is an outcome of water scarcity và refers lớn scarcity in terms of unique and accessibility of water. Water găng tay may manifest in conflict over water resources, over-extraction, or poor health & disease.

Extreme water vulnerability: Extreme water vulnerability is the combination of the highest levels of physical water scarcity & lowest levels of drinking water service that affects a given population (surface water, unimproved or limited water service).

Water security: The capacity of a population lớn safeguard sustainable access lớn adequate quantities of và acceptable quality water for sustaining livelihoods, human well-being, và socio-economic development, for ensuring protection against water-borne pollution và water-related disasters, & for preserving ecosystems in a climate of peace & political stability. Water insecurity occurs when any or all of these needs cannot be met.
